Outside of his work on the farm in Isanti, MN, Jerry Westrom enjoys following professional sports, especially his favorite Major League Baseball (MLB) team, the Minnesota Twins.

As the Twins battled for the playoffs late in the 2017 season, the organization was already experiencing success in the minor league system. The Elizabethton Twins, Minnesota’s Appalachian League affiliate, won the Appalachian League championship after defeating Greeneville in the first round and then sweeping the Pulaski Yankees in a best-of-three championship series.

The Twins won the first game of the championship series 12-1 and jumped out to an 8-3 lead in Game 2 before allowing the Yankees to close the gap to 8-7. That was as close as the opposition would come, however, as Elizabethton held on for the victory. The team received strong performances throughout the season from a group of potential future MLB players that includes Jose Miranda, Rainis Silva, and Ryley Widell. Miranda led the team with 11 home runs, while Silva, the team’s catcher, recorded an impressive batting .356 average to go along with five home runs and 10 doubles. On the pitching side, Widell struck out 41 batters through 29 and two-third innings.
